ANCIENT ROMAN ANTIQUITY SALAD
I get lots of requests for this recipe. Even people who are not so crazy about salads
remark how much they like it. This salad is based on data on ancient Roman salad
recipes. This is my own twist on such recipes. Take a trip back two thousand years to
old Roman times when you try this very tasty tossed salad. This salad is sure to become
one of your favorites.
4 tbs. prepared Italian Dressing (any good bottled commercial brand from your grocery)
Romaine lettuce (from your grocer’s produce section)
Pickled hot pepper RINGS (any good bottled commercial brand from your grocery)
Olive oil (any kind of olive oil)
One-half cup cider vinegar
MSG (from your grocer’s spice section)
Garlic powder and black pepper
Grated Parmesan cheese
Fresh blue cheese (OPTIONAL)
Tear up one bunch of rinsed Romaine lettuce and put it in a large salad bowl.
Then pour
in four tbs. of any good bottled ITALIAN (only) dressing that you can get from your
supermarket. IT MUST BE ITALIAN DRESSING.
Then throw in a few pickled hot
pepper RINGS that you can get from your supermarket. MAKE SURE THAT YOU
USE PEPPER ‘RINGS’ ONLY.
Next add lots of olive oil.
Any kind of olive oil is okay
but the Extra Virgin grade will provide a more fruity flavor to your salad if you desire
that.
Next put in one-half cup of plain cider vinegar.
After that sprinkle in a couple
shakes of MSG which can be purchased in the spice section of any supermarket.
Then
throw in about a quarter tsp. of garlic powder and an eighth tsp. of black pepper.
Next
shake in lots of grated Parmesan cheese (the same kind you buy to shake on spaghetti).
Optionally, if you like it, crumble up a two inch cube of fresh blue cheese that you can
buy at your local farmer’s market. The blue cheese is optional because some people do
not like it.
Finally, mix everything together well (toss).
Serve and enjoy.
I find that this
salad tastes even better the next day after refrigeration when it has wilted a little.
Perfect
for picnics, pot luck, and dinners.
This salad will be a big hit and people will ask you for
the recipe.
